Auction results truly fantastique for new building

auction-invite-pg1.jpgThe 2008 Wright Spirit Auction, organized by the Parent Association, lived up to its Cest Fantastique theme.  The group met their goal of raising $500,000 at the event to support construction of the new Language and Performing Arts Center.

The fund-a-need request brought in more than $145,000 in gifts from $100 up to $40,000.   These donations were matched by a gift from Holroyd, a sand and gravel operation, and its owners Stephen and Rita Nielsen.  Stephen graduated from Charles Wright in 1974.  His brothers David ’73 and Mark ’79 are also CWA alums.  Stephen and his wife Rita have a set of twins in the eighth grade here – Decker and Alex.

Trip to Guatemala opens students eyes

nphi_logo.jpgA small group of Upper School Charles Wright students spent their Winterim experience this year exploring Central American culture and history and working with children at an orphanage in Guatemala.  Lower School Spanish teacher Plinio Gutierrez-Delgado, a native Spanish speaker, guided the nine students throughout their adventure. 

“It was a powerful experience to see how much our students can change in just one week,” says Gutierrez-Delgado.

Students practice their French on nine-day trip

img_2491-1.JPGFrom Normandy to Notre Dame, 14 very lucky Charles Wright students spent their Winterim in France with French teacher Jaime O’Dell and history teacher Nick Coddington. The trip emphasized enhancing student’s French language skills and developing their understanding of World War II, European and art history.

Herrington receives prestigious national honor

jherringtontyc.jpgIn each academic discipline, there is one organization that is usually the marker for high achievement and success.  In the world of choral music, that organization is the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). 

The annual ACDA convention features information on the latest choral music techniques and showcases music performed with “honor choirs” selected from the region.  An outstanding choral director is chosen to conduct the honor choir.  This year, Charles Wright’s own Judy Herrington was chosen for this honor.
