It’s only the first full week of classes, but Ryan Johnson’s environmental biology class took their first field trip today. The powerful way to get into what you’re learning is to get out – get out into nature, get out into the community, and get out into the world. In that spirit, the eleven seniors in Johnson’s class spent this morning searching for organisms just eight miles from campus on a scavenger hunt at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium.

A big thank you to MLS4owners.com, a company owned by Ken Whitney ’77, for serving as this weekend’s Cake Topper sponsor for Charles Wright’s 50th birthday bash. The RSVPs are almost tallied (last call for all those still debating their weekend plans!) and the decorations are going up. This is going to be one heck of a great party!

Charles Wright proudly defines higher education as challenging, rewarding and joyous training for a life well-lived. If students need a model for that sort of life, they need look no further than former Headmaster Ted Sanford.
At age 83, Ted is retired and living in Gig Harbor with his wife Diana. In retirement, he has volunteered with CASA, taught in a public school, written columns for the Peninsula Gateway and traveled extensively with Diana. And now he has become an accomplished artist.

I must confess, I am a rummage junkie. The Wright Stuff farmhouse is officially open on Wednesdays, but as I have a key, I’ve also been in there for an hour or so at a time Friday, Saturday and Monday. If you see the sign out, feel free to stop in.

If you’re considering opening a bakery, you may want to consult the fifth grade class at Charles Wright. Their first bake sale of the year kept the main corridor of the Lower School buzzing at recess this morning as each class was released in grade order to shop for tasty treats. Students came with quarters in hand. For those who forgot, Lower School Head Diane Hunt was making loans at the Bank of Diane.

Near the exit to Charles Wright’s campus sits an inconspicuous old farmhouse and aluminum-sided warehouse. You’ve probably driven by a hundred times without noticing, but this little corner of campus is home to one of the school’s most dedicated team of volunteers and its second largest fundraiser.

In the first week of fall sports competition, the Charles Wright Tarriers eased into the season with a full schedule of non-league play. The varsity football team played Tacoma Baptist while the girls’ soccer, volleyball, and boys’ tennis teams all faced Washington.

CWA faculty are exceptionally qualified and highly trained, and they’re the sort of people who don’t spend their summer vacations sitting on the couch watching soap operas. At least no one has owned up to that yet. This summer was no exception – CWA faculty found adventure all over the world and they are bringing new perspectives back to their classrooms.
