With Thanksgiving a fading memory, Charles Wright is headed full speed into the holiday season. At a school known for both its academic focus and quirky sense of humor, the holidays seem to bring out the best of both traditions. In the Upper School, students are clearly studying hard for finals, but today you are just as likely to see someone skipping across the commons wearing a piece of silver garland like a feather boa and humming the tune to the Fruitcake Song.

Charles Wright fifth grade teacher Carie Olsen was recently “board certified” by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Board certification requires completing a multi-year process that established Olsen possesses a high level of proficiency as a teacher, as opposed to teacher certification, which signifies that one has met minimum state standards for entrance into the profession.

The class of 2018 is on track to make school history this fall. Currently, 83 percent of second grade parents are participating in the Annual Fund. If the class hits 100 percent, it will be a first for any grade level. With $100,000 left to raise, there are now 13 classes participating at rates above 50 percent.

On November 27, at an event in New York City, Nick Coddington, a history teacher at Charles Wright Academy, will be honored as the nation’s top holocaust educator. The Jewish Foundation for the Righteous will present Coddington with the Robert I. Goldman Award, an award given annually to a teacher who demonstrates excellence and creativity in the field of Holocaust education.

Swimmer Cole Scarbrough, a senior at Charles Wright Academy, signed a National Letter of Intent today to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Scarbrough is a state champion and all-American swimmer.

Charles Wright’s Upper School marked Veterans Day this week with a ceremony to honor the men and women who have served in our nation’s armed forces, and from half way around the world, one of the school’s graduates found a very special way to honor the school.

Seven members of the Charles Wright girls’ soccer team received all-league honors after wrapping up a very successful season. The Tarriers were 11-3-1 in the regular season and played in five post-season games to end the year 13-6-1. None of the honored players are seniors, so they are all expected to be back next year to lead the team through another season.

The Charles Wright Parent Association put on a record-breaking rummage sale this weekend. Shoppers started lining up at 6a.m. on Saturday morning and by the time the doors opened at 9a.m. the line stretched all the way from the doors of the Tarrier Dome to the gravel student parking lot.

Charles Wright today launched a new blog dedicated to the language and performing arts. The Boundless Expression blog will cover the capital campaign for and construction of the new Language and Performing Arts Center and it will also cover the choral music, instrumental music, drama, English and foreign language programs which will be housed in the new building.
