The all-school holiday assembly is one of Charles Wright’s oldest and richest traditions. This school has a unique mission to empower our students to achieve their personal best in mind, body, and spirit. And this campus has a unique sense of community. The holiday assembly is a product of both those forces and it’s one of the most important school functions held each year.

This fall Charles Wright seventh graders watched an episode of Bill Nye’s PBS show on buoyancy in their science class. They tried to replicate one of his experiments and discovered what they believe is a significant error in his procedures and conclusions. This project is just one of the ways teacher Alex Koerger challenges students to develop their ability to think and analyze, creating evidence from data to support or refute their hypotheses. His intent is to push his students to the limits of their abilities and have them struggle through to the other side, knowing they have worked hard and been successful.

As that all too familiar hazy shade of winter returns to the Charles Wright campus each fall, coaches and athletes head indoors for basketball season. Over the years, the Tarriers have fielded some exceptional teams, and the 2007-2008 season is living up to that legacy. As the Tacoma News Tribune reported last week, the men’s team may well be state contenders.

Charles Wright is a powerhouse in the world of Knowledge Bowl and this year’s team is off to another strong start 2-0 start. You too can test your knowledge with a sampling of the questions the Tarrier team nailed on their way to retake the state championship.

Eric Anton, a 2004 graduate of Charles Wright, led the Colgate University to a league soccer championship this year, the first Patriot League championship for the Raiders in 10 years. Anton, who was a member of Charles Wright’s state champion soccer team, was the Raiders’ co-captain. He earned 15 starting assignments this season and played in all but one game.

Giving is an art, and teaching our students about the joy of giving is just one of the responsibilities that falls to Charles Wright Chaplain Mike Moffitt. Our students do many service projects throughout the year, and Charles Wright students always do a little extra at the holidays. This weekend is the big Christmas dinner, which we’ll report on next week. Today Moffitt brings us an update on a new service project.

 Jim Dempsey has been named co-coach of the year among high school girls’ soccer coaches in the Nisqually league and Casey Jones has been named the district III middle school/junior high coach of the year by the Washington State Football Coaches Association. Charles Wright’s athletic program strives to develop excellence, not merely competitiveness, and both Dempsey and Jones have demonstrated that they can do both.
