Tarriers win! Play for state championship Saturday

dsc_0017-1.JPGTarriers win!  Charles Wright’s boys’ basketball team will play for the state championship tomorrow for the first time in school history.  Tonight they beat Bellevue Christian, the 23-2 team expected to win the state title, by a final score of 54-52.  It’s their seventh straight post-season victory.  The Tarriers will face fourth-ranked River View Saturday at 7:00p.m. in the SunDome.

Hill’s foul shots, 14 points lift Tarriers to 54-52 victory

Gerald Hill sank two free throws with five seconds left to lift Charles Wright past top-ranked Bellevue Christian in a Class 1A boys state semifinal game Friday.

The victory sends the Tarriers (21-6) into Saturday’s 7 p.m. championship game against fourth-ranked River View. It’s the first time either team has played for the state title.

Hill, who finished with a team-high 14 points, pushed the Tarriers ahead 52-50 on a driving layin and free throw with 34 seconds left. The Vikings (23-3) retook the lead on free throws by Jeff Rerucha with 20 seconds to play.

Hill was fouled driving the lane for a final shot.

Jorden Hand added 11 points and eight rebounds for Charles Wright, and Patrick Philley chipped in nine points.

David Downs led BC with 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Jeff Aly added 12 points.

The Tarriers shot 42 percent (21 of 50) for the game, as did BC (19 of 45). But the Vikings hit just 26 percent (7 of 27) in the second half.
