For 50 years, religion and spirituality have sparked lively discussions on the Charles Wright campus. Now Chaplain Mike Moffitt is taking those discussions to a larger audience with Waiting for the Whisper, a monthly podcast featuring interviews, reviews, and more.
The first episode, “Foundations,” features interviews by Moffitt with Sam Brown, Charles Wright’s founder, and Tyler Francis, physical education teacher and basketball coach. In addition, several students have contributed reviews.

Charles Wright’s Knowledge Bowl team took back their state title on March 22 at the division A tournament in Spokane Valley. The Tarriers have now won the state championship four of the last five years. In 2007, they lost by just one point. This year the team really focused on the details to make sure they brought the trophy back home at the end of the season.
“This team is one of the strongest and youngest teams in school history,” says Coach John Lemma. “Typical past teams have been composed of five seniors and one junior. This year we had two seniors, two juniors and a sophomore. The future of the CWA Knowledge Bowl Team has never looked more promising.”

American writer and film director Stanley Kubrick once said that “what chess teaches you is that you must sit there calmly and think about whether it’s really a good idea and whether there are other, better ideas.”
The Charles Wright community seeks to challenge students in every discipline to think about whether their first inclination is really a good idea and whether there are other, better ideas, but we teach those lessons directly to our chess teams. It seems that Charles Wright students have learned those lessons pretty well. Some of the state’s best chess players are right here in our Lower and Upper Schools.

If you’re planning to climb Mount Everest this summer (and hey, who isn’t) you may have read the News Tribune’s front-page story: Closed? Local guides predict losses after China reserves Everest for Olympic torch climb.
Eric Simonson, co-owner of Ashford’s International Mountain Guides company, was pictured and quoted in the article. What the TNT didn’t report is that Simonson is a proud member of the Charles Wright family (hard to imagine how they missed an important fact like that!)

Last weekend’s state basketball championship concluded one of the most exciting seasons in Charles Wright’s athletic history. These players and coaches now join an elite group of alums who can call themselves state champions. In recent years, the Tarriers have won championships in cross-country, golf and tennis and they have come very close to winning in track and field and soccer. But until last weekend, Charles Wright had won only two state championships in team sports in the last 30 years.
This year’s boys’ basketball players demonstrated tremendous grace, endurance, confidence, cooperation, skill and heart. They not only won games, they won the respect of their teammates, coaches, opposing teams, and referees. And for that, as much as for the state championship, they deserve to be recognized.

With 14 seconds left on the clock, Jorden Hand sunk two free throws to seal the state championship victory for Charles Wright on Saturday night. The Tarriers won by five. Ken Whitney, a 1977 graduate of Charles Wright and Lower School parent was in the crowd and captured the moment on video tape. His footage shows just how many people were in the Sundome stands for the championship game and the enthusiasm of the crowd chanting “C-dub! C-dub! C-dub!” Click here to watch Ken’s video on You Tube. He’ll be posting more video clips soon. We’ve also started loading pictures on the photos.charleswright.org site.
