Moore shatters school record shooting 29
Charles Wright has had some very good golf teams in the past, but even before the season began, Coach Howard Wouters predicted this boys’ team would be the best. With just one more regular-season match to play, the Tarriers are undefeated. They have faced the team expected to be their toughest competition – Chimacum – and senior Geoff Moore has shattered the school’s all-time record shooting four under par 33 at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club.
On April 10, junior Joey Merrill led a strong Charles Wright team in the match against Orting. He shot two under par at High Cedars Golf Course, leading his team to a 27 stroke victory. Merrill’s 27-stroke lead was supported by juniors Nevis Granum and Andrew Brito, who posted 38 and 39 respectively. Charles Wright cruised to victory 154-181.
On April 14, the Tarriers faced Chimacum at Tacoma Golf and Country Club. They defeated the highly capable Cowboys, a team Coach Wouters called their toughest opponent of the season, by 17 strokes. The team was led by senior Geoff Moore who shot one over the course’s par 36 and senior John Chong who shot 38. Junior Sam McAvoy, Merrill and Brito all brought home scores of 40. The final team score was 154-171.
Charles Wright faced the team from Fife on April 16 at Meadowpark Golf Course. Moore led the team with a one over par 36. Merrill and Brito scored matching 38s, and McAvoy finished the course in 39 strokes. The Tarriers rolled over the Trojans, winning the match by 34 stokes with a team score of 151-185.
On April 24, Charles Wright faced Cascade Christian at the Classic Golf Course. The Tarriers won 152-183. Moore and Merrill both shot 36, right on par.
On April 28, CWA met Tacoma Golf and Country Club. The Tarriers won 156 to 161. Moore shot a two over par 37.
If you see this team on the links you might just want to let them play through. They’re not going to let anything stand in their way of bringing home back-to-back state championships. They’ll play in the Egbers Tournament at Skagit Golf and Country Club on May 2 and against Seattle Christian and Overlake on May 5 at Tacoma Golf and Country Club. Earlier in the season, the Tarriers tied with Overlake in Redmond.
Post-season play begins May 12 with the League Tournament to be held at Gold Mountain Golf Course. Winners will advance to the Tri-District Tournament the following day at Ft. Lewis Golf Course. The State Tournament will be held May 20-21 at North Bellingham Country Club.
Girls’ Golf
The girls’ golf team wrapped up its regular season this week with a record of three wins and one loss. Their 1-1 league records puts them in third place moving in the post-season.
On April 9, Charles Wright beat Annie Wright by just two strokes, 145-147. Junior Deanna Wade led the team with a 44.
On April 16, Wade tied the school’s all-time record with a score of 40 on the Meadow Park course. Wade also recorded her first eagle on the 200 yard, par four, fifth hole. Sophomore Rebecca Bonner and Senior Hailey Jones also posted personal-bests at that match shooting 47 and 50, respectively. The Tarriers’ team score was 195. Fife forfeited the match.
Senior Kelsie Atz, sophomore Georgia Wade, sophomore Tana Watanabe, and freshman Stephanie Friend have also played very well in both matches.
On April 29, the Tarriers lost to Overlake, 211-176.
