Charles Wright’s track and field, golf, and tennis teams are on their way to state. Last weekend a dozen track and field athletes and eight tennis players qualified for state competition, while the soccer team finished their season in a tough state quarterfinal loss. Eight members of the boys’ and girls’ golf teams play in their state tournaments today. A total of 28 Tarriers are now competing at state in spring sports in golf, tennis, track and field.

Lt. Daniel Shaw, a Navy Chaplain who recently returned from Iraq, visited Charles Wright Academy to thank the kindergarteners who sent him cards, pictures and care packages during his tour of duty. Shaw distributed these items to the men and women in his unit. This was a year-long class project and the young students were extremely excited to have their friend visit for the first time.

Marc Janes, Director of College Counseling at Charles Wright Academy, wrote a guest column about the college admissions process which was published in the May 7 issue of the Peninsula Gateway, the weekly newspaper in Janes’ hometown of Gig Harbor. In the article, Janes offers the same great advice Charles Wright families are used to getting from him to high school students and their parents throughout the community.

Today was the last day of high school for Charles Wright’s Class of 2008. Tomorrow they begin working in the community for their senior internships and graduation will be held June 7. This afternoon the entire Upper School gathered in the commons to celebrate their achievements at the annual awards assembly. The following students were recognized for accomplishments and contributions during the 2007-2008 school year:

Charles Wright is sending eight golfers to the state tournament in Bellingham next week. The five boys and three girls all have hopes of doing well individually and bringing home state championship titles as a team. The News Tribune reported on this success this morning.

The Charles Wright boys’ soccer team won their first state tournament game last night against LaCenter by a score of 3-1. The Tarriers were behind at half-time, but in the second half Cory Barrett scored twice and Dillon Truscott, who passed up a trip to state with the tennis team to play in the state soccer match, also scored.
The Tarriers will enter the quarterfinals on Friday. They face Columbia from White Salmon at 6:00pm in Seattle at Franklin Pierce in Tacoma.

The Charles Wright girls’ tennis team took the Nisqually league’s sub-district tournament by storm last week. The Tarriers is sending all eight players – three doubles teams and two singles players – on to the district tournament. Five of the league’s eight slots in the district tournament will be filled by Charles Wright.

The Charles Wright boys’ soccer team suffered their first loss of the season last weekend, but the Tarriers’ hopes are still alive as they had already earned a trip to the state tournament.
After winning Nisqually League Championship and taking second in the bi-district tournament, CWA is one of sixteen teams competing for the state championship. Their first game is tonight against LaCenter at 6:00pm at Frankin Pierce.

Jieun Oh, a 2004 graduate Charles Wright Academy, has received Stanford University’s top academic honor. She was presented with the prestigious J.E. Wallace Sterling Award for Academic Achievement, given to 23 outstanding students in Stanford University’s School of Humanities and Sciences each year.
