This week in sports
During the past week, Charles Wright athletes have recorded victories in every fall sport except cross-country, which had the week off from competition. This week the boys tennis team will play their final two matches of the regular season and then compete in the Nisqually League Tournament on CWA’s campus Thursday and Friday. Next Friday is also a big game for the Upper School’s varsity football team which will playing against Cedar Park Christian before a Homecoming crowd.
Tennis
The Upper School boys tennis team continues to have a great season despite two rained out matches. They beat Vashon 5-0 on Wednesday at home. Daniel Ham, playing in the number one singles spot, won his match 6-0, 6-4. Chris Gugliuzza won 6-0, 6-1. Tim Chang won 7-5, 7-5. Dillon Truscott and Chris Wong teamed up for a 6-1, 6-1 doubles victory. Hunter Hassig and Xavier Al-Mateen won 6-1, 6-0.
The Tarriers are 8-1 this year.
Soccer
The Upper School JV and varsity girls soccer teams both won games against Cascade Christian this week. The JV team beat the Cougars 5-0 with Sarah Johnson scoring two goals and Kate Jewson scoring three. The varsity team won their game by a score of 6-1 with three goals by Fallon Staples, and one apiece from Natalie Weyerhaeuser, Liz Helmer and Valarie Rutan.
The Middle School boys soccer team beat both Cascade Christian and Showalter. The Tarriers won their game against Cascade Christian 5-0 with single goals by Ted T., Nate Y., and Andrew W. and two goals scored by Nate M. Charles Wright beat Showalter 4-2 with two goals each from Nate M. and Andrew W.
The Middle School boys team now has a 3-1-1 record. The Upper School girls JV team is 3-1 and varsity is 5-3 on the season, 4-2 in the league.
Football
While the Middle School and Upper School football teams struggled a bit this week in match-ups against Showalter and Vashon, the 5th and 6th grade team pulled out a big victory against Orting. The Young Tarriers were firing on all cylinders. Tuesday night’s game was a fantastic display of football on all three areas of the game: offense, defense and special teams, prompting the nick name The Terrific Tarriers! They beat Orting 38-7.
The 5th and 6th grade team now has a season record of 4-3-1. Middle School varsity is 2-1. Upper School JV is 2-1. Upper School varsity is 2-2 this season and 1-1 in league play.
Volleyball
The Upper School’s varsity and JV volleyball teams won big matches on the road against Orting. The JV team beat the Cardinals 2-1 with scores of 24-26, 25-14, and 25-21. The varsity team won 3-0 with scores of 25-18, 25-15, 25-17. Erin Hoolihan had six service aces and 20 assists. Kate Ellwanger had two service aces, six kills and six blocks.
The Middle School’s two JV teams have a combined record of 2-4 this season. Middle School varsity is 3-2. The Upper School’s C-team is 0-1. JV is 3-5. Varsity is 2-7 on the season and 2-4 in league competition.
