Choral music students shine

Charles Wright’s choral music students have much to celebrate this winter.  Next weekend the Upper School’s Academy Singers will travel to Portland, Oregon, to attend lectures and concerts, and to sing at several churches and schools.  Meanwhile, two CWA singers have received special honors in the world of music. Hip hop writer and poet to visit CWA

CWA will welcome J. Alan Speaks-Love, a nationally recognized hip hop writer and poet, to campus on Thursday, February 5. At 11:30am he will meet with 6th graders, 12:20pm with 7th and 8th graders, and 1:55pm with Upper School students. The day will end with a 6pm parent session in the Middle School Commons. All CWA parents are encouraged to attend the evening session. Speaks-Love will critically analyze hip hop culture in historical and contemporary contexts. He believes that contemporary youth culture and popular culture are synonymous, and it is incumbent upon young people, as well as their parents, to understand how these two cultures co-exist. CWA welcomes NYT best selling author

CWA will welcome New York Times best selling author Garth Stein to campus on Thursday, January 15, as part of the Upper School’s 2008-2009 speaker series.  At a 1:55pm assembly he will read from his best selling literary novel, The Art of Racing in the Rain (Harper, 2008), and take questions from students.

Winter storms cancel student activities, but not Hoop It Up

Back-to-back-to-back December storms impacted class schedules and disrupted student activities at CWA last month, but they couldn’t cancel the annual candle-light Christmas Eve service or keep the school’s alumni away.  The largest crowd yet came to participate in and cheer on the 5th annual Hoop it Up alumni basketball tournament.
