Tri-District loss wraps up winter sports season

Charles Wright’s boys basketball team lost a heartbreaker at Bellevue Christian last night after scoring more points than they scored as a team in any other game this season and maintaining a lead until the final moments of the game.  The Tri-District loss ended the Tarriers hopes of returning to the state tournament to defend their state championship and brought CWA’s winter sports season to a close.

The Tarriers led the Vikings from the very beginning of the game, building up a 12 point lead early in the first quarter.  Bellevue Christian fought back, however, outscoring CWA in the next three quarters and gradually chipping away at that lead.  At half-time, CWA led by five points.  At the end of the third quarter, they led by three.  Bellevue Christian closed in during the fourth quarter and tied the game with 4:25 left on the clock at 56-56.  The Vikings took the lead for the first time with just over two minutes left to play and the final score was 71-60.  You can catch up on the all the play-by-play action by clicking here and visiting the school’s new Twitter page.

Despite the loss, Charles Wright’s team had a lot to be proud of in this game.  Jordan Hand, in his final appearance at CWA, scored a season high 26 points.  Senior Eric Knowles scored 16.  Junior Brandon White had eight points.  Senior CJ Dale and Sophomore Sean Fuller had four points each.   Sophomore Marquel Hawkins contributed two points.

Including their three post-season games, Charles Wright was 12-14 this year.  Their 5-3 league record was strong enough for a third place finish.  The Upper School JV boys basketball team finished 9-11.  Hawkins, Pat Dale, Kobe Dietz, Nick Mungia, Stanley Peterson, Alex Nielson, Lucas Agnew and Chris Peterson all made significant contributions to the team’s success and a number of these players were pulled up to the varsity squad throughout the season.

The Middle School varsity boys basketball team finished their season with a 5-5 record.  The JV team had seven wins and four losses.  Nate M., Calvin C., Patrick V., Jack S., Wunmi O., Gavin E., Bradley G. and Collin H. had particularly strong seasons.

The Upper School varsity girls basketball team finished their 5-15 season with a 1-11 league record.  Seniors Fallon Staples and Laura Doman played particularly well this year.  The JV team had a 10-7 record.  Freshmen Janay Davis, Sydney Hughes and Decker Nielsen all contributed significantly to the team’s winning season.

The Middle School girls soccer team also competed during the winter sports season.  The varsity squad finished 7-1 and the JV team was 3-3-1.  Minah C., Malia K., Erin F., Lauren F., Katie M., Olivia, Shelby, Destiny S., Clare B., Kenzie P., and Tony B. all made significant contributions to their teams’ successes.

Middle School girls basketball is just beginning their season.
