Ten Tarriers win regional History Day honors, advance to state

Charles Wright Academy’s National History Day scholars competed in the regional History Day competition on Thursday, March 26, and ten students from the school advanced to the state competition in May.

National History Day encourages students to become historians by developing research, analysis, presentation and social skills. Working individually or in groups, Charles Wright students selected topics relating to this year’s History Day theme – the individual in history.  They conducted extensive historical research using primary sources, articles, and books, then distilled their research and analysis into a multimedia documentary, museum exhibit, website, or research paper. CWA Knowledge Bowl team wins 2A state championship

The Tarriers asked for a bigger challenge this year.  They got it, they met it, and they came home victorious.  After winning four state Knowledge Bowl championships in five years competing against 1A, 1B and 2B schools – those with 467 high school students or less – Charles Wright Academy’s third request was granted to compete against 2A schools with 468 to 918 students.  Read the rest of this entry »

Tarrier Ishmael Stinson signs with CWU Wildcats

Ishmael Stinson of Steilacoom, a senior at Charles Wright Academy, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play football for Central Washington University.  The Tarrier has a 37-inch vertical leap and averaged more than 9 yards per carry his junior year, before being sidelined in the first game of his senior season by a leg injury.

“Ishmael had a tremendous career as a Tarrier and will make immediate contributions to the Central Washington football team,” predicts CWA Coach Mike Finch. “His explosiveness and intelligence will help him in becoming Central’s next big offensive star.” Read the rest of this entry »

Five basketball players win all-league honors, spring sports kick off season

Charles Wright’s basketball program announced today that five players received all-league honors this year. Senior Jorden Hand has been named to the first team all-league and senior CJ Dale has been named to the second team. Both will play for the Nisqually 1A All-Stars in a match-up against the Nisqually 2A All-Stars on Friday, March 20, at Auburn High School. The game starts at 5:30 pm. Read the rest of this entry »

Winterim spreads CWA students far and wide

Charles Wright’s Upper School wrapped up another successful Winterim last month.  Winterim is a break from regular classes and takes place in February. The five-day experiential program allows students and faculty to share concentrated exploration of themes and activities outside the regular curriculum.  This year students spread out across campus, the Tacoma community and the world to expand their horizons.   We asked a few faculty members to share their thoughts about the experience.  We’ve also put together a video slideshow from one of last year’s Winterim trips.  Click here for the video from the 2008 Havasu Winterim trip.

Ultimate undefeated the first weekend of competition

Charles Wright’s ultimate program, now in its seventh year, kicked off the season with a couple of wins last weekend.  This year over 70 Middle School and 40 Upper School students are playing interscholastic, club and international tournaments.  Last weekend the Middle School A-squad beat Mercer 18-14 and Edmonds 10-6.  The B-squad beat Mercer 14-10 and a combined B/C-quad beat Edmonds 14-2.  A mixed team from Charles Wright beat Hamlin Robinson 15-0. Inkblots wins national recognition

Charles Wright’s Upper School literary magazine, Inkblots, has received several prestigious honors this year.  First the 2008 magazine won fourth place in the Best of Show competition at the National Scholastic Press Association convention in Philadelphia.  Then the NSPA’s publication critique gave CWA a first class rating with three marks of distinction.  Finally, the National Council of Teachers of English’s 2008 Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines evaluated nearly 500 publications and ranked Charles Wright’s Inkblots one of the top 30 to receive the organization’s highest award.  CWA was one of only two Washington state high schools to earn this honor this year.  Read the rest of this entry »
