Wade takes 4th, boys golf wins 6th, track and tennis Friday

Charles Wrights boys and girls golf teams didn’t repeat their 2008 twin second-place finishes at the state tournament in Richland, but all four seniors in the competition played very well today.  Deanna Wade, the only CWA girl to qualify for the state match, took 4th place in Richland.  She scored an 88 yesterday and another 88 today for a total of 176.  The winner of this year’s state girls 1A championship is a golfer from Chelan who scored an amazing 146, beating the second place finisher by 27 strokes.  Deanna finished just four strokes out of second place.  Read the rest of this entry »

Soccer players win ten awards as golfers advance at state

CWA’s boys soccer team lost a heartbreaker in the state quarterfinals on Saturday evening.  Alex Benfanti, assisted by Dillon Truscott, scored the team’s only goal in the 2-1 loss.  The Tarriers played very well and Coach Tony Chursky called the end the game the most exciting 20-minutes of soccer he’d seen in a long time.  CWA had a great season and with just two starting seniors graduating, there are high expectations for next year’s team.  Read the rest of this entry »

Track and tennis athletes headed to state

CWA did very well at the girls tennis district tournament and quad-district track and field meet.  CWA’s doubles team of Sarina Halankar and Megan Kelley won the district doubles title with a score of 7-5, 6-4 in their final match of the day.  Singles player Sara Finkleman plays today for third place and a chance to compete at the state match in Yakima with Halankar and Kelley.  At the track meet at King’s, 15 CWA athletes qualified for Saturday’s finals.  The final round of a few events were held on Thursday and the following athletes have already qualified for the state meet in Cheney May 29 and 30: Jeff Crabill and Max Laberge in the 1600m, Ishmael Stinson in the triple jump and Caitlin Bunning in the javelin throw.

Soccer team advances to state quarter-finals, seven golfers head to state

Update: CWA will play Seattle Academy in the state quarterfinals on Saturday, May 23, at 5pm at Franklin Pierce High School.  The teams met once this year in a post-season match-up as they prepared for district and state competition.  That game ended in a 1-1 tie.  CWA is currently 13-0-2.

Charles Wright’s boys soccer team didn’t make it look pretty, but they won their game against La Center today, 3-1, in the first round of the state tournament.  The big story of this game was the excellent work of two freshmen – Andrew Cheney and Justice Nichols.  Read the rest of this entry »

Soccer team upsets returning state champs to win Tri-District Championship

UPDATE: CWA soccer will play La Center in the first round of the state tournament on Tuesday, May 19, at 5pm at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma.

CWA’s boys soccer team upset the returning state champions, a very tough team from King’s, to win the Tri-District Championship this afternoon in Mt. Vernon.  With goals scored by Dillon Truscott and Ben Olp, CWA won 2-1.  The Tarriers are now a #1 seed to the state tournament.  Read the rest of this entry »

Crabill and Stinson win on first day of league track and field meet

Results are in from the first day of the Nisqually 1A league championship track and field meet on Wednesday at Fife.  After the first four event scores were recorded, CWA was tied with Orting for first place in the boys competition and the girls were in second.

Junior Jeff Crabill won the boys 1600 meter run and Senior Ishmael Stinson won the boys triple jump.  Frehman Rie Nordestgaard took second in the girls 3200 meter run and Senior Caitlin Bunning took second in the girls javelin throw.  Taking third for CWA in their respective events were Sophomore Rebecca Byrne in the girls shot put and Senior Nick Smith in the boys 1600 meter run.  Junior Max LaBerge scored points for the boys team in the boys 1600 meter run with a fifth place finish, as did Freshman Emma Levant who came in sixth in the girls long jump. Soccer team league champs, headed to state tournament

CWA’s boys soccer team has an undefeated record heading into the bi-district tournament in Mt. Vernon this weekend, but they’ve got their work cut out for them as they face off against the 2008 state champions from King’s. The Tarriers will play Saturday, May 16, at 5pm at Mt. Awards ceremony celebrates students’ success

Charles Wright Academy takes great pride in defining success in many different ways.  The annual awards ceremony, held May 7, recognized and celebrated the achievements of students in classrooms, athletics and service to others.  Awards recipients were selected by the faculty of the Upper School and teachers took the opportunity to tell the parents and students gathered what makes each of these recipients such a success. CWA students win state National History Day award

Freshmen Koby Deitz and Alex Nielsen took second place at the Washington state National History Day contest in March, becoming the very first Charles Wright students to advance to the national competition just outside Washington DC in mid-June. They may even have the opportunity to display their exhibit at the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History.

Deitz and Nielsen studied Abe Saperstein, founder of the Harlem Globetrotters, and built and exhibit explaining how he changed the game of basketball and influenced U.S. race relations.  Read the rest of this entry »
