UPDATE: CWA soccer will play La Center in the first round of the state tournament on Tuesday, May 19, at 5pm at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma.

CWA’s boys soccer team upset the returning state champions, a very tough team from King’s, to win the Tri-District Championship this afternoon in Mt. Vernon.  With goals scored by Dillon Truscott and Ben Olp, CWA won 2-1.  The Tarriers are now a #1 seed to the state tournament. 

They’ll place their first game Tuesday at 3:30pm at Washington Premier Field in Puyallup 5pm at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma against La Center.

Meanwhile, CWA also won its third consecutive league girls tennis championship on Friday and the boys track and field team won a league championship is as well.  The girls track and field team came in second.

TENNIS
The Tarriers swept the first and second place for both singles and doubles in the Nisqually 1A Girls’ Tennis Tournament.  Sara Finkleman, Jean Kim, Sarika Halarnakar, Megan Kelley, Sarah Johnson, and Natalie Weyerhaeuser all qualified for the District tournament that will be held next week at the University of Washington.

Singles: #1 seeded Finkleman dominated the singles draw only losing 5 games in her rout to the Leauge Championship.  #2 seeded Jean Kim defeated her first two opponents handedly before losing a tough final against Finkleman.

Doubles: #1 seeded Halarnakar and Kelley defeated a seemingly difficult #4 seed from Vashon 6-1, 6-2 in the semis before defeating Johnson and Weyerhaeuser in the finals. Unseeded Johnson and Weyerhaeuser took 2nd place with a cagey win over Vashon #2 in the semis, and nearly got the best of the #1 seed for the championship.

Other CWA players: #2 seeded Lindsay Ehlers/Jackie Kirschner suffered a tough defeat by the #2 Vashon doubles team in the quarterfinals, and went 8-0 in doubles during league play.  Freshman Julia Murray upset the #3 seed from Cascade Christian 6-4, 6-4 until she ran into fellow teammate Kim in the semi-finals.

TRACK & FIELD
At the league track and field championship meet, the Tarrier boys ran away with the title.  They scored 183 points while the next closest team, Orting, scored just 76.  The girls team from CWA came in second with 155 points, just three behind Orting’s team.

The top finishers for CWA were Diane Lawrence, Cierra Gillard, Jake Weyerhaeuser, Nick Smith, Jeff Crabill, Ishmael Stinson and the relay teams of Stinson, Weyerhaeuser, CJ Dale and Blake Greene, and Lawrence, Emilee Bell, Grace Su and Rachael William.  Weyerhaeuser won both the 100m and 200m dashes and ran the second leg of the winning relay team, becoming the only Tarrier to bring home three first-place finishes from the event.
