Soccer team advances to state quarter-finals, seven golfers head to state
Update: CWA will play Seattle Academy in the state quarterfinals on Saturday, May 23, at 5pm at Franklin Pierce High School. The teams met once this year in a post-season match-up as they prepared for district and state competition. That game ended in a 1-1 tie. CWA is currently 13-0-2.
Charles Wright’s boys soccer team didn’t make it look pretty, but they won their game against La Center today, 3-1, in the first round of the state tournament. The big story of this game was the excellent work of two freshmen – Andrew Cheney and Justice Nichols.
At halftime the game was scoreless. When play resumed, Cheney got an assist from Spencer Scholes and took a clean shot to score the Tarrier’s first goal. A few minutes later, Senior Corey Barrett made a corner kick to Senior Ben Olp who made it 2-0 for Charles Wright. La Center fought back and scored on a corner kick of their own. Timeout was called when Goalkeeper Max Zimmerman’s foot was injured. He left the field on one foot and was replaced by Nichols who played much of the second half and made several good plays. Anthony DiLeonardo scored to make the final scoreboard 3-1 and Zimmerman returned at the very end of the game. The team now advances to the quarterfinals on Saturday, May 23. The time, location and opponent should be announced tomorrow. Check back here for an update.
Meanwhile, the boys and girls golf teams played through driving rain at the Eagle Pride golf course near Fort Lewis. In difficult conditions, all six members of the boys team made the cut to qualify for the state tournament next week in Richland. With a cut-off of 90, Sam McAvoy and Nevis Granum each shot a 78. Andrew Schmitz came in one stroke behind them at 79. Chris Panagiotu shot 83. Andrew Brito shot a 97. Chris Peterson came in at 89, just making the cut. As a team, the boys took second in the district tournament.
Deanna Wade shot an even 100 to take fifth place on the girls side. Falling just below the cut of 113, Georgia Wade will be an alternate to the state tournament.
