Soccer players win ten awards as golfers advance at state

CWA’s boys soccer team lost a heartbreaker in the state quarterfinals on Saturday evening.  Alex Benfanti, assisted by Dillon Truscott, scored the team’s only goal in the 2-1 loss.  The Tarriers played very well and Coach Tony Chursky called the end the game the most exciting 20-minutes of soccer he’d seen in a long time.  CWA had a great season and with just two starting seniors graduating, there are high expectations for next year’s team.

Even without a state championship, the honors are piling up for the team that won the league championship and tri-district championship in a 13-1-2 season.  This morning the News Tribune named Truscott the all-area boys soccer player of the year and gave top billing to a feature story about him.  Click here to read the article. Truscott was also the Tacoma Athletic Commission’s athlete of the month and the Nisqually League’s most valuable player.  Senior Ben Olp was the league’s defensive player of the year.  Olp will play for Westminster College in Salt Lake City next year.  Cory Barrett, Colin Kodama and Benfanti were all named to the first team all-league.  Anthony Dileonardo and Andrew Cheney were named to the second team.  Honorable mention was given to Spencer Sholes.

STATE GOLF
CWA’s seven golfers at the state tournament in Richland competed in fair weather today.  The boys have all finished playing the 18-hole course and three made the cut to play the second day in the tournament.  Sam McAvoy scored a 72, just five strokes behind the leader from Ilwaco.  McAvoy will tee-off tomorrow in a five-way tie for eighth place.  Nevis Granum is in a seven-way tie for 29th place with a score of 78.  Andrew Brito, Chris Panagiotu and Andrew Schmitz finished with scores of 81, 82 and 83, respectively.  Unfortunately, only Panagiotu made the cut to play Thursday.  He is tied for 40th place.  Chris Peterson finished the day with a score of 93.  Deanna Wade, CWA’s lone female golfer in the tournament, is still out on the course.

UPDATE at 5:36pm: With 24 of 40 girls in off the course, Deanna Wade is in a three-way tie for third place at the 1A girls state golf match.  She scored an 88 over 18-holes today and is 16 strokes behind the leader from Chelan.  Wade should easily make the cut to play in the final round tomorrow.

STATE TENNIS & TRACK
CWA has three tennis players and 15 track and field athletes competing in those state events this week. Both events begin Friday in Eastern Washington.

MIDDLE SCHOOL
We’ll have a full wrap up of the spring sports season in the Middle School after Upper School athletes finish their state events this weekend.  One thing we can tell you now, those Tarriers are fast!  This year’s Middle School track and field team has posted new top-five school records in every event except three and the season isn’t over yet.  CWA has been keeping those records for 25 years.
