Gift from the Class of 2009 arrives on campus

The senior class gift from CWA’s class of 2009 arrived on campus this week. Five beautiful new benches have been installed along the outside wall of the Upper School. The benches are under the overhang, so they’ll be a perfect place for students to gather on rainy days. Behind them glass windows face onto the commons. The names of all 81 members of the class are engraved on plaques installed along the edges of four of the benches. The bench in the center has a plaque dedicating the gift in honor of Sam Brown, the school’s founder, who passed away earlier this year. Forty years ago this week, the astronauts aboard Apollo 11 stepped onto the moon and into the history books. Just two years later, CWA got its own little piece of space race glory – a visit from Stuart Roosa, command ship pilot for Apollo 14, shortly after he returned from the moon in 1971. Apollo 14 was NASA’s third mission to the moon.
The new Language and Performing Arts Center at CWA is within weeks of completion. Inside, painting and polishing are about all that’s left to finish. Outside, the landscaping and installation of railings is well under way.
Like many of his colleagues, Rob Scotlan, CWA’s eighth grade English teacher and a volleyball and basketball coach, is spending a lot of his summer vacation reading. He’s written two new blogs reviewing the novels The Reader and The Known World. Click here to find out what he thinks:
