Last week the College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced that three CWA students scored in the top one percent of college-bound students on the PSAT. Seniors Iean Drew, Austin Jung and Blake Walsh were named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. This week CWA is pleased to announce that 13 additional students scored in the top five percent of test takers and have been named National Merit Commended Students. A seventeenth Tarrier scored in the top one percent of African American test takers and was named a semifinalist for the National Achievement Scholarship. Read the rest of this entry »

CWA’s Upper School volleyball team is out to their best start in years. The team has a season record of three wins, three losses, and a league record of two wins, two losses. In 2007 the team was 3-10. In 2008 they made it farther into the post season than ever before with a 5-9 record. Two of the three teams the Tarriers have defeated this year were teams that beat them last year. Despite the experimental education week disruptions to practise and competition, boys tennis continued undefeated play this week and the cross-country team posted a whole series of new personal records. More than 3.5 million high school students took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) last year and three CWA students scored in the top one percent of test takers.
Seniors Iean Drew, Austin Jung and Blake Walsh were named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists after they earned some of the top scores in Washington state. Nationwide 16,000 students were named semifinalists. In the South Sound, 18 students received the honor. No school in the area had more semifinalists this year than Charles Wright.

The 2009 Tacoma Film Festival has accepted films by three young women from Charles Wright Academy — two current students and one alumna.

The Upper School students in Brian Hutcheson’s painting and drawing class start each year by exploring contour lines and how they help artists understand and define three dimensional form. As part of that exploration this year students made contour line studies of the new Language and Performing Art Center. They were then challenged to translate their initial studies into larger drawings using blue painter’s tape. The result was a remarkable installation in the gallery space near the front door of the Upper School. The exhibit comes down today. Read the rest of this entry »

Last week the Washington State Cross Country Coaches Association ranked Charles Wright’s boys team number one in the state among 1A teams. They are followed by Lyden Christian, King’s, Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls), Seattle Christian, Zillah, Chelan, Cashmere, Ilwaco and Bellevue Christian. Last week the Tarriers faced Seattle Christian, the only other Nisqually league team ranked in the top ten, and beat them by a solid margin, 29 points to 42 (low score wins). On Saturday, September 12, two sell-out crowds of students, parents, alums, teachers and many more friends packed the Donn Laughlin Theater to watch the very first show produced in the new Language and Performing Arts Center.
