CWA’s fall athletes turned in another great performance this past week. The boys tennis team and girls cross-country teams were particularly successful. We’re wrapping up the third week of the school year at Charles Wright, but for students this is the first five-day week of classes. Here are five photos taken around campus this week. What you won’t find here yet are photos of the grand opening show in the Donn Laughlin Theater. Stay tuned for those photos next week.
#1 Lower School runners were out in force at the Bellarmine Invite last weekend. Ok, this wasn’t actually take on campus, but it’s a great photo to highlight the fact that 123 Lower Schoolers have turned out this fall for the very popular Running Club, now in its third year. They practice on campus twice a week and participate in weekend races with runners from other schools. Running Club is a great way to introduce youngsters to the joy of running as a team sport and encourage a life-long commitment to fitness.

CWA’s football, volleyball, girls soccer and boys tennis teams posted their first wins of the season this week as the Upper School’s athletic program swung into high gear. It is especially worth noting that the varsity football and volleyball teams beat opponents who beat them last year. It’s a promising start for the Tarriers.

The school year’s first edition of The Academy Times, Charles Wright’s Upper School student newsmagazine, hit campus newsstands this week with stories about summer exchange trips to Spain and France, how the school is weathering the economy, fall sports and many other news bits. Pass Tempo, the very first show in CWA’s new Donn Laughlin Theater, is going to be a sell out! Tickets area already gone for the first show and the development office is keeping a wait list for those who hope to attend the 6pm performance. There are just a handful of tickets left for the 8:30pm show so producer Andrew Evans ’05 expects they will both be sold out by the end of the week. Call 253.620.8306 right away if you need tickets.

The 2009-2010 school year kicked off for CWA athletics with a pair of football games last week. The JV squad faced Wilson at home on Thursday afternoon and lost 22-14. The varsity team played Tacoma Baptist at Curtis High School on Friday evening. According to the News Tribune, “The Crusaders overcame a stellar passing performance by Tarriers’ quarterback Brandon White, who threw for 343 yards and five TDs” to win 50-43. Cory Barrett rushed for 37 yards and accumulated 176 yards receiving for a total of 26 points. On defense, Rafael McCauley led the Tarriers with seven tackles.
