CWA wins league tennis championship

09-Boys-TennisThe Charles Wright boys tennis players won the league championship outright for a second year in a row.  Six Tarriers now advance to the district tennis tournament in May.  This was a young team with a lot of freshmen and sophomores playing at the varsity level.  “They worked very hard to win this championship,” said Coach Reini Vanderheyd. Mondou batting .400 for Team USA

47b9ce38b3127cce98548b70cb3f00000035100IbM2bRyycsoTeam USA is 2-0 at the Pan Am games in Ecuador after defeating Nicaragua 15-0 in four innings and Panama 8-0.  CWA freshman Nate Mondou is batting .400 after the first two games.  He has two hits and three runs in five at bats, including a double.  He also has one RBI and on-base-percentage of .500.  In the field he has one catch and one assist. CWA freshman only Northwest player on US National baseball team

47b9ce30b3127cce98548a41cf0700000035100IbM2bRyycso[1]CWA freshman Nate Mondou of Bonney Lake is one of 18 young baseball players selected to represent the United States on USA Baseball’s 14U National Team at the 2009 COPABE Pan Am ‘A’ Championships in Portoviejo, Ecuador.  Mondou has been training in Florida with his teammates.  They leave for South America today and the tournament begins Saturday.     Read the rest of this entry »

Tarriers vs Cougars (c)Koerger003It’s been another great week for Tarrier athletes.  Special recognition goes to the Upper School boys cross-country team for maintaining their #1 state ranking for six weeks straight, to the Upper School boys tennis team for wrapping up an undefeated season with a 13-0 record, to the Middle School varsity volleyball team for reaching a major milestone when they posted a winning record this week, and to the Middle School football team for persevering and posting their first W of the season.     Read the rest of this entry »

Chursky, Kreger and Gula make headlines

TonyChursky1978SeattleSounders-1In the last few weeks, three Charles Wright Tarriers have made headlines around the region – English teacher and director of soccer Tony Chursky was honored by the Sounders, alum and former CWA English teacher Erika Kreger ’88 published a new book, and Sophomore Brian Gula brought now the house as a member of an ensemble celebrating the Tacoma City Club’s 25th anniversary.

Upper School musicians prep for first concert in the Donn Laughlin Theater

090914cwa_0290CWA’s Upper School musicians are preping for their first concern in the Donn Laughlin Theater.  They’ve got a few tricks up their sleeves for the special occasion and they’re getting a little help from some familiar faces.  Athletic Director Casey Jones ’66, Middle School science teacher Alicia Bright ’95 and a number of other faculty members will be joining the choir for special numbers.  Bright has also helped the choir with a little choreography.  Read the rest of this entry »

CWA Arts Guild a new way to get involved

arts guild shopThere’s a new way for Charles Wright parents, particularly the parents of Middle and Upper School students who spend less time volunteering in the classroom, to get involved.  The Arts Guild is a newly reconstituted group organized to support and promote CWA’s arts programs.  Initially the group is focusing its efforts on Middle and Upper School performing arts.   Read the rest of this entry »

Third graders trek to Mt. Rainier in a snow storm and it’s all caught on video

IMG_2518In the company of third grade teachers Deanne Trummert and Jon Flies, and Lower School science teacher Gabriel Newton, Charles Wright’s class of 2019 headed off to Mount Rainier last Friday to find the headwaters of the Nisqually River and begin their year-long study of the Nisqually watershed.  The whole trip was caught on video so you can join in the adventure from the comforts of home. Weekly sports wrap

09-Boys-TennisWins were posted this week at CWA in the Upper School by girls soccer and boys tennis.  The soccer team has lost just one game this year and the tennis team is undefeated.  Meanwhile the boys cross-country squad is ranked #1 in the state for a fifth consecutive week.
