It’s been pretty quiet around the Charles Wright campus the past two weeks, but while most teachers and students are on winter break the Upper School boys and girls basketball teams continue to practice and compete.  Both squads lost several strong starters last year and this year’s senior class has fewer basketball players than most.  None the less, both teams are proving they can be competitive.

Girls Basketball
The varsity girls team’s last victory was on December 18.  In their season home-opener they defeated Chimacum 32-26.  The Tarriers came out strong in the first quarter and put up 10 points to the Cowboys’ seven.  Control of the game swung to Chimacum in the second quarter and the Cowboys outscored the Tarriers 11 to three to take a narrow two-point lead.  CWA regrouped at half-time and scored 15 points in the third quarter to Chimacum’s two.  The game almost slipped away from the Tarriers again in the fourth quarter when Chimacum outscored them four to two, but they held on for the win.  Juniors Rachael Williams and Rebecca Byrne led the Tarriers with eight points apiece.  Junior Jackie Kirschner contributed seven.  Junior Jessica Hirota and sophomores Decker Nielsen and Sydney Hughes each scored three points.

Boys Basketball
The CWA boys varsity team recorded a 64-33 non-league victory over Auburn Adventist on December 22.  The game was close in the first quarter.  CWA scored seven points to Auburn’s 6.  The Tarriers built on that narrow lead in the second quarter, outscoring Auburn 15 to six.  Their lead continued to grow in the third quarter, as they scored 19 to Auburn’s 8, and the fourth quarter, where they outscored their opponents 23 to 12.  Junior Colin MacLeod led the Tarriers with 16 points.  Seniors Harry Doumit and Sean Fuller each scored 12. Junior Pat Dale came up with nine and junior Marcquel Hawkins scored eight.  Juniors Lucas Agnew and Nathan Fischer contributed five points and two points, respectively.

Girls Soccer
Soccer is such a popular sport in the northwest that there aren’t enough fields available for all the teams to play in one season, or even two.  High school girls soccer is played in the fall and boys soccer is played in the spring.  Middle school boys play in the fall.  Middle school girls draw the short straw and play in the first of two winter sports seasons.  Despite the cold and rain, the Tarriers are playing very well this year.  The varsity team’s last victory was a 1-0 win over Cascade Christian on December 9.  Eighth grader Olivia P. scored the team’s lone goal all the way from the sweep position.  The JV team won their last game of the calendar year, a 1-0 victory over North Tapps.
