Jenny Lee starts her career in fashion design at New York’s Parsons

lee-for-blogLots of high school students like to be fashionable.  Jenny Lee likes fashion itself, so much so that she’s about to devote four years of her life to learning the art and business of fashion design at one of the nation’s leading art and design colleges, Parsons The New School for Design.  Like many of her classmates, Jenny first looked broadly at colleges.  “Everyone wants to have that normal college experience,” she says.  “Then, a year ago, I was watching the fifth season of “Project Runway” and it just snapped in my mind – ‘This is what I want to do.’   So, I’m not going to have the normal college experience.” Read the rest of this entry »

For Darcy Walker it was always Oregon

dwforblogDarcy Walker grew up with the image of one college campus in her mind.  When she was in elementary school, her older brother graduated from the University of Oregon.  She visited him often when he was in school and so the Eugene campus just naturally came to epitomize for her what college was all about.  “When it came time to apply to colleges, I was just dead set on U of O,” she says.  “Since my brother is a lot older than me, it didn’t bother me that I was following in his footsteps.” Read the rest of this entry »

Chursky and Francis named all-league coaches of the year

ChurskyforblogCWA’s baseball and boys soccer teams have won a total of 16 all-league honors this spring.  Tony Chursky was named the 2010 boys soccer all-Nisqually league coach of the year and Tyler Francis was named baseball’s co-coach of the year.  Seniors Dillon Truscott and Cory Barrett also won top honors.  For the second consecutive year, Truscott was named the league’s most valuable soccer player.  Barrett was named defensive player of the year. Lee wins Congressional Art Competition

JLwithartforblogCongressman Norm Dicks has selected CWA senior Jennifer Lee as Washington’s Sixth Congressional District winner of the 2010 Congressional Art Competition.  Lee’s win was announced at an event in Tacoma last week and she will be honored at the unveiling event in Washington D.C. in June.  Her work will hang in the Capitol complex for the next year among works by students all across the country.   Read the rest of this entry »

CWA girls win league tennis championship

CWA Girls 2010A 002CWA’s girls tennis team wrapped up a 12-1 season by winning the league championship for a third straight year.  Charles Wright dominated the tournament, winning the top three places in both the singles and doubles events.  The only matches any CWA players lost were to their own teammates.  Six Tarriers now advance to the quad-district tournament this coming week in Seattle. Susan Blyler chooses PLU

SusanBforblog“When I was younger I wanted to go away to college.  Then I realized that if I was from any other part of the country, I would want to come here,” says CWA senior Susan Blyler.  “I like the attitude of people in the Northwest, the vibe and the culture.”  That’s the main reason that after ten years at Charles Wright, while her classmates fan out across the country, next fall Susan will be moving across town to attend Pacific Lutheran University. CWA wins middle school title and high school spirit award at Spring Reign

DSC_5192-1In April, CWA sent six teams and 82 athletes to the world’s largest youth Ultimate tournament.  Spring Reign was held in Burlington with 40 middle school and 40 high school teams from around the United States and Canada.  CWA won the middle school division, winning six straight games and outscoring their opponents 75-27.  They also won the “C” division title.  CWA finished fourth in the high school division after two close semifinal games.  The Tarriers were also voted the Ultimate Spirit award winners by the other high school teams.   Read the rest of this entry »

Middle School scientists win honors at 40th annual contest

image004Charles Wright Middle School students recently competed in the Washington Science Teachers Association’s 40th Annual Science and Engineering Contest.  After four months of work with advisor Steve Daniels, they placed in the top three in five events against competitors from other Western Washington schools.
