Back-to-school issue of Ties looks at CWA’s math program

In the fall 2010 back-to-school issue, Ties takes a good look at CWA’s math program.  CWA has one of the most successful college prep math programs in the country.  By fourth and fifth grade, it’s typical for 95 percent of our students to earn scores in the top half of national norms on standardized math tests.  Students build on that foundation through Middle and Upper School where we offer 12 different math courses across five grade levels.  By graduation, half our students take Advanced Placement calculus and it’s quite common for 100% of them to pass.  Our students’ SAT math scores are also well above local, state and national averages.  These result are astounding, unless you know our faculty.

In this issue, recent graduates Ben Mishkin ’10 and Jiwon Yune ’09 and teachers Nick Zosel-Johnson, Carie Olsen, Mike Finch, Gil LeFrancois, Richard Kalustian, Howard Wouters, Laurel Webster, Leon Phillips and Jeremy Stubbs explain how the program works.  We have a quiz about triangles (see the extended version of that quiz and the answer key below) and several charts showing how our students scores compare to other schools.  This issue also includes details on the winners of the Inspirational Faculty Award and Distinguished Alumni Award, both presented at graduation.  The Bridge article is written by alum Nick Mocceri ’98, Bleed Green is written by incoming Athletic Director Bill White, and the issue wraps up with Class Notes and the school’s Annual Report.

Ties should turn up in your mailbox within a few days.  Here are the online exclusives to go with this issue:
