On Thursday, October 23, the Charles Wright Academy Singers, an ensemble of 21 Upper School students conducted by Upper School Choral Director Aimee Mell, will debut their production of “The Reluctant Dragon.” This 23-minute operetta tells of “the adventures of a boy, a saint and a dragon back when the world was different and there were more dragons about than there are nowadays.” Read the rest of this entry »

The halls of the Upper School have been buzzing this week with the rumor that the Seahawks drum line, Blue Thunder, might perform at Charles Wright’s homecoming on October 17. We’re happy to report that rumor is absolutely true! CWA students Kate Ellwanger, Alex King, Angela Yang and a host of other stomping, clapping, back-up-singing students have recorded their own version of Ben Lee’s song “Catch My Disease.” Now they’re out trying to catch Blue Thunder on a Seattle radio station. There are a lot of very talented people working at Charles Wright Academy and the visual arts department is helping everyone discover some of those hidden talents with the Faculty/Staff Art Show. The gallery at the entrance to the Upper School is now adorned with the work of seventeen CWA teachers and staff members. There are paintings, quilts, drawings, photographs, pottery, mixed-medium pieces and a number of installations involving home-grown vegetables. Jieun Oh, a 2004 graduate Charles Wright Academy, has received Stanford University’s top academic honor. She was presented with the prestigious J.E. Wallace Sterling Award for Academic Achievement, given to 23 outstanding students in Stanford University’s School of Humanities and Sciences each year.

This week the Charles Wright Players, under the director of John Forier, will present The Wizard of Oz, a musical based on the MGM classic. There are four performances, including a special Saturday matinee for Lower and Middle School families. Seating is limited, so be sure reserve your seat in advance.

Charles Wright today launched a new blog dedicated to the language and performing arts. The Boundless Expression blog will cover the capital campaign for and construction of the new Language and Performing Arts Center and it will also cover the choral music, instrumental music, drama, English and foreign language programs which will be housed in the new building.

The Charles Wright Players have done it again. Their production of A Thurber Carnival debuted last night to a packed house in the Upper School music room. The cast of ten and crew of six put on a spectacular show in about a dozen different scenes, all short scripts written by James Thurber. Each scene is really quite absurd and quite funny, so if you’ve ever enjoyed Saturday Night Live, you’re going to love this show.
