Students receive awards at graduation and awards assembly

Over the years, five awards have been established to identify the qualities we value at Charles Wright and would like to see manifested in our students.  Three awards were established in 1979 to honor: consideration for others; improvement, particularly in the senior year; and enthusiastic support of school activities.  In 1987, a fourth award was added for the senior who best exemplifies the qualities of a Charles Wright student.  In 1998, we added a fifth award for good citizenship.  These five awards were named for the first five CWA headmasters.  Though presented by the Headmaster on behalf of the school, the recipients for these awards have been chosen by the CWA Upper School faculty. CWA presents Lifetime Teaching Award to Steve Daniels

Steve Daniels retired in June of 2011 and was presented with this Lifetime Teaching Award and the annual faculty/staff appreciation event.

For 41 years, Steve Daniels taught and coached at Charles Wright, always striving with humility, dignity and grace to help each student achieve his or her full potential. For so many years, and through so many changes, Steve was a steady rock in our community. He set high yet obtainable goals for his students and made sure they understood his expectations. His great consistency allowed growing minds to learn how to be good students as they fine-tuned their study strategies and built foundations for knowledge. He never gave up on anyone and always held all those around him accountable to themselves and the Charles Wright community. He modeled for all integrity, honesty, kindness and generosity. Emily Harper goes the distance to Colby

Emily Harper is counting on her feet to carry her far. The distance runner has dreams of seeing the world and she made her college choice with those adventures at the forefront of her mind. That’s a wrap on the track

On May 27th and 28th, 17 CWA athletes from the track and field team travelled to Eastern Washington University for the state meet. While historically both the boys and girls teams have been quite successful, this year the Tarriers battled a series of injuries to put their best foot forward in each event. Tennis teams win double state championships for the first time since 1978

For the first time in more than 30 years, CWA won both the boys and girls state tennis championships. A total of seven Tarriers made the trip to the state tournament, competing as three doubles teams and one singles player. The team titles were won with accumulated points from a first place finish in boys singles play, fourth place finish in boys doubles, and second and sixth place girls doubles finishes. Kane and Dale honored by local chapter of the National Football Foundation

CWA football players Michael Kane and Pat Dale, both seniors, were recognized last weekend at the 35th Annual Tacoma-Pierce County Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet. Coaches from each of the 31 high schools in the area nominated a lineman and back candidate from their school on the basis of outstanding football ability, academic application and performance, and outstanding leadership and citizenship in both school and community activities. CWA fifth grader brings home bronze ball

CWA fifth grader Noah Schachter, one of the top young tennis players in the country, competed at the U.S. Tennis Association’s Spring National Championship in Delray, Florida, earlier this month. Tarriers earn three all-league basketball honors

The spring sports season is now well underway, but decisions have only recently been made for all-league basketball honors. Charles Wright’s new varsity girls basketball coach, Kate Rue, was honored as the Nisqually League’s 1A Girls Basketball Coach of the Year. Junior Sidney Hughes earned first team honors for the girls team.  Senior Colin MacLeod was chosen as a member of the boys second team. MacLeod was also one of 13 Nisqually players selected for the Cloud 9 South Sound All-Star Games. He played on March 18 at Auburn High School, scoring 11 points with seven rebounds and six assists. CWA hosts Ultimate Green Games

Now in its tenth year, Charles Wright’s Ultimate program hosted its first big tournament on March 13. A total of 21 middle and high school teams from nine schools in the Portland-to-Seattle region came to CWA for the Green Games. Five Charles Wright teams competed and the Tarriers posted a 12-4 record with two teams undefeated. Read the rest of this entry »
