On May 27th and 28th, 17 CWA athletes from the track and field team travelled to Eastern Washington University for the state meet. While historically both the boys and girls teams have been quite successful, this year the Tarriers battled a series of injuries to put their best foot forward in each event. For the first time in more than 30 years, CWA won both the boys and girls state tennis championships. A total of seven Tarriers made the trip to the state tournament, competing as three doubles teams and one singles player. The team titles were won with accumulated points from a first place finish in boys singles play, fourth place finish in boys doubles, and second and sixth place girls doubles finishes. CWA football players Michael Kane and Pat Dale, both seniors, were recognized last weekend at the 35th Annual Tacoma-Pierce County Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet. Coaches from each of the 31 high schools in the area nominated a lineman and back candidate from their school on the basis of outstanding football ability, academic application and performance, and outstanding leadership and citizenship in both school and community activities. CWA fifth grader Noah Schachter, one of the top young tennis players in the country, competed at the U.S. Tennis Association’s Spring National Championship in Delray, Florida, earlier this month. The spring sports season is now well underway, but decisions have only recently been made for all-league basketball honors. Charles Wright’s new varsity girls basketball coach, Kate Rue, was honored as the Nisqually League’s 1A Girls Basketball Coach of the Year. Junior Sidney Hughes earned first team honors for the girls team. Senior Colin MacLeod was chosen as a member of the boys second team. MacLeod was also one of 13 Nisqually players selected for the Cloud 9 South Sound All-Star Games. He played on March 18 at Auburn High School, scoring 11 points with seven rebounds and six assists. Now in its tenth year, Charles Wright’s Ultimate program hosted its first big tournament on March 13. A total of 21 middle and high school teams from nine schools in the Portland-to-Seattle region came to CWA for the Green Games. The Jumping Jaguars are wrapping up their 15th season dazzling fans with their acrobatic jump-rope and dance routines. The team of Lower Schoolers will perform on campus for the last time at the Town Hall on Friday, March 4. Commentators often say that the greatest ballerinas do what would be physically impossible for most people so gracefully that it looks effortless. Perhaps her teachers and parents know just how much work it has actually required, but to the untrained eye, Parker Reynolds appears to have handled both her high school years and the college application process so gracefully as to make both appear absolutely effortless. One the first day of the NCAA National Signing period, three CWA seniors were honored by their coaches, teachers, classmates and parents for making the significant commitment to compete in college athletics and securing admission to their chosen university. Natalie Weyerhaeuser, Pat Dale and Lucas Agnew have all committed to Division III athletic programs next year. Weyerhaeuser will play soccer for Williams College, Dale will play football for Carleton College, and Agnew will play football for Claremont McKenna College. Several other seniors are expected to compete at the college level as well, and those students will be honored in the spring after their final decisions are made. Read the rest of this entry »

The Woodrow Wilson Foundation announced this week that Charles Wright Academy alum Aukeem Ballard ’07, a senior communications major at Lewis and Clark College, has been selected for a prestigious national fellowship in teaching. Ballard is one of 25 fellows selected for the second cohort of the Woodrow Wilson-Rockefeller Brothers Fund (WW-RBF) Fellowships for Aspiring Teachers of Color.
