Natalie Weyerhaeuser blazes her own trail to Williams

Monday, January 24th, 2011

Deciding where to go to college might be the only thing about which Natalie Weyerhaeuser has ever changed her mind. That might sound like an exaggeration, but since she arrived at Charles Wright 14 years ago as a bright-eyed Beginning Schooler, Weyerhaeuser has made a name for herself as a particularly focused and driven student. Generally speaking, she knows exactly what she wants and she sticks to it, but when it came to choosing a college, Weyerhaeuser took a different path. Read the rest of this entry »

Brendan Rome to pipe for Macalester

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

The day after Christmas, Brendan Rome went shopping and he bought himself the biggest warmest North Face coat he could find. He’s going to need it, because next year he’ll be attending Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, where the average temperatures in January are a low of 6°F and a high of 23°F. Surprisingly enough, it wasn’t the weather that attracted Rome to Macalester. Read the rest of this entry »

Jackie Kirschner goes Orange at top communications school

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

Most of the Charles Wright seniors who submitted early decision or early action applications this fall to their top choice school were hoping for just one acceptance. Jackie Kirschner was hoping for two. Kirschner researched colleges early and found a school that offered everything she wanted. She applied early to both Syracuse University and its S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. The Charles Wright “lifer” from Gig Harbor was among the very first members of her class to get exactly what she wanted: admissions offers to both. Alum’s gift a big boost for outdoor education program

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

At the end of 2010, Charles Wright Academy’s outdoor education program received a very generous gift from an alum, a gift that will benefit all the school’s students as they participate in the program in all three divisions.

Steve Munn graduated with the class of 1981 and his mother taught in the Lower School. Some of his fondest memories from his years at Charles Wright are of backpacking trips taken with his friends and teachers. Read the rest of this entry »

Ties examines Literature at CWA

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

The winter 2010 issue of Ties is in the mail so keep an eye out for it! This issue focuses on Literature across the curriculum at CWA. Senior Rachel Williams wrote the cover story about her experience with the Junior Research Project. Headmaster Rob Camner shares his thoughts on one of his favorite novels. English Department Chair Creighton King, Lower School Librarian Deborah Baldwin, Middle School Librarian Sam Harris and Spanish Teacher Dana Flaskerud all share their perspectives on literature at CWA as well. On the Bridge, alums Rhett Mayfield ’94 and Emily Rome ’08 discuss how CWA influenced them to become writers. Filling out the issue, Athletic Director Bill White explains how three different rule books govern our sports programs, there’s a full report on Homecoming and the 2010 Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame inductions, and of course there are lots of Class Notes. Of special note: on page 11 you’ll find a really adorable photo of our very first third generation Tarrier! Beginning Schooler Mackenzie Will is the daughter of Trevor Will ’93 and the granddaughter of Jaime Will ’65. What a great family tradition!

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

The 2010-2011 school year began today.  While the Middle Schoolers were wrapping up at camp, the Lower School welcomed the class of 2024 (this year’s Beginning Schoolers) and students and parents in all the Lower School classes posed for family photos before the school day began.  The Upper School held an assembly in the Donn Laughlin Theater, the very first assembly where the class of 2011 could call themselves seniors, and the halls were soon full of their books and backpacks.  By the time the Middle School faculty and students returned to campus mid-afternoon, the year was well underway.  Tomorrow the entire student body will be in class.
