History’s a rap for eighth graders

Headmaster Rob Camner likes to say that people at Charles Wright take seriously what they do but don’t take themselves too seriously.  Nowhere is that more true than in the Middle School.  There that Tarrier spirit extends to the entire student body and these student-produced videos are proof positive of that fact. Faculty/staff art show highlights hidden talents

There are a lot of very talented people working at Charles Wright Academy and the visual arts department is helping everyone discover some of those hidden talents with the Faculty/Staff Art Show.  The gallery at the entrance to the Upper School is now adorned with the work of seventeen CWA teachers and staff members.  There are paintings, quilts, drawings, photographs, pottery, mixed-medium pieces and a number of installations involving home-grown vegetables.  Get a taste of what you’re missing with this photo gallery and then drop by the Upper School to see the real deal.  Read the rest of this entry »

It’s the first day of school at CWA

Middle School graduation a major milestone

dsc_0019-1.JPGThe completion of eighth grade is a big occasion at Charles Wright. The transition from Middle School to Upper School is traditionally marked by a ceremony that celebrates the individuality of all these students at a point in their lives when defines themselves as individuals is critically important. The faculty spend weeks coming up with the three perfect words to describe each graduate and their unique personality.

Moffitt examines re-creation in all its forms

moffitt-2.jpgCharles Wright Chaplain Mike Moffitt has produced a new episode of his podcast Waiting for the Whisper.  In this show he focuses on re-creation in various forms.  He interviews students and faculty about their summer plans for recreation.  He interviews Headmaster Rob Camner and Kit Granum, board member, capital campaign co-chair, parent and alum, about the re-creation of the CWA campus with construction of the new language and performing arts center.  Finally, Moffitt sits down with Emily Rome ’08 to talk about graduation, CWA memories and plans for the future.

Phillips receives Inspirational Faculty Award

phillips-2.jpgParents, students and faculty overwhelmingly nominated Mr. Leon Phillips, 8th grade mathematics teacher extraordinaire, to be this year’s recipient of the Charles Wright Academy Parent Association’s Inspirational Faculty Award. His commendations remind us of the great importance, complexity and significance of the role of “teacher”, particularly for an age group that is so often ill-at-ease with the adults in their world. Leon masters the art of teaching young teenagers and of seamlessly managing the faculty-student relationship that is at the heart and soul of the Charles Wright experience.

Struxness gets 30-year pin, three others retire

struxness.jpgOnce a year, Charles Wright’s faculty and staff gather to celebrate their colleagues’ service to the school at the annual Employee Recognition event.  Pins are awarded to those with five, ten, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years and service and goodbyes are said to those departing at the end of the academic year.

Treasea Miller receives outstanding staff member award

080519teachers_425-1.jpgTreasea Miller, the Middle School secretary and registrar since 2002, received this year’s Chris Steele Award.  It is the highest honor for a member of the Charles Wright staff and mirrors the selection process for the inspirational faculty award which will be presented at graduation.  Miller received the honor at the annual employee recognition event this week.

CWA History Camp to examine the role of individuals in history

Rising sixth through twelfth grade CWA students are invited to attend the first History Camp to find out how ordinary people do extraordinary things and change the history of art, business, civics, education, entertainment, law, media, medicine, military, music, politics, religion, science, sports or style. There are no fees, but enrollment is limited to the first 20 students.

CWA breaks ground on new language and performing arts center
